Klaas Jan Huntelaar has confirmed that Schalke 04 wants him back this month and he is weighing up his future at Ajax.

It was an excellent night for the 37-year-old, who came off the bench in the 89th minute to score twice which led Ajax to a 3-1 victory at FC Twente.

After the game, he was asked about the interest from Schalke 04, who are hoping to bring the striker back to the club to help their fight against relegation.

Huntelaar told ESPN, “They have reported. I’ve talked about it with Ajax, but it’s a difficult choice for me. I have played for a long time at Ajax, six and a half years now. And I played at Schalke for seven years. So they are the two clubs that I like the most.”

Asked if he had a preference, Huntelaar said, “What do I lean towards? Difficult … There is something to be said for everything. Schalke is in more trouble, they need me more, so that is more of a feeling choice. Ajax is a bit more stable and perhaps a bit nicer in terms of ending, with the possible title, the cup tournament and European football. Of course it is difficult. I’m not so far out there that I can tell. I’m going to sleep on it one more night.”

Huntelaar has previously hinted that he wants to retire at the end of this season.
