Ajax are set to terminate the contract of the 36-year-old, but can possibly then go to the table with Huntelaar to discuss a new contract.
Speaking to AD, Huntelaar is unsure what Ajax will do, “Whether Ajax wants to continue, no idea. So for me, three options haunt my mind: to stop, or continue at Ajax, or at another club.”
Is Huntelaar considering retirement? “Well, when is a good time to stop?
“That is very difficult. You don’t want to stop too early, because if you regret it. You can only stop once. But it is not good too late, that you are done halfway through the season. You want the moment I think that many players experience something consciously, so they decide that it is no longer possible, they have an injury or are mentally just done with it, but I don’t have that feeling at all, on the contrary. ”
Huntelaar still believes in his ability, “I will tell you, and you shouldn’t get that wrong, but if I had played all games, I would have been at the top of the top scorers list now.”
Huntelaar has the best goals to minutes ratio in the Ajax first-team at the moment. He has nine goals in 18 appearances in the Eredivisie.
