Huntelaar’s contract with Schalke is up at the end of the season, and the Bundesliga side are not keen on a renewal due to the striker’s massive wages and injury issues.

German newspaper BILD are reporting that Schalke have sanctioned Huntelaar to leave at the end of the summer and are sure the striker will choose a return to Ajax. The 33-year-old was a fan favourite at the Amsterdam Arena in the two years he spent there between 2006 and 2008 and has been heavily linked with a return over the past few seasons.

What Huntelaar’s arrival will mean for the future of Ajax’s current strike force remains to be seen. Kasper Dolberg is currently first choice number nine, while the club also have Mateo Cassierra and Kaj Sierhuis, while Richairo Zivkovic and Zakaria El Azzouzi are out on loan.
