AZ Alkmaar made it five wins from five in 2019 with a simple win over bottom of the table NAC Breda.

John van den Brom’s AZ side turned up at NAC full of confidence after winning all four of their matches in 2019. The hosts, however, had slipped to the bottom of the table and there has been pressure put on coach Mitchell van der Gaag this week.

The difference between the two sides was in evidence in the first half with AZ Alkmaar completely dominant in tough conditions. Finally, after 33 minutes the opener came when Jonas Svensson crossed for a totally free Guus Til to tap in from close range.

Benjamin van Leer then denied Adam Maher and Thomas Ouwejan with good saves as AZ continued to press. NAC Breda were poor but they hit the post before the break through Gervane Kastaneer.

The second half saw AZ continue to dominate and it was 2-0 after 54 minutes when Calvin Stengs played an excellent through ball for Til to slot in his second.

Van Leer then pulled off an excellent save to push Bjorn Johnsen’s strike onto the bar, while Oussama Idrissi put a drive inches wide.

AZ goalkeeper Marco Bizot was finally called into action in the 80th minute as he pushed away a fierce Kastaneer drive. However, that was as close as NAC came and in the 89th minute, substitute Albert Gudmundsson made it 3-0 with a low drive into the bottom corner.

The victory means AZ are now only two points behind Feyenoord in third, while the crisis at NAC Breda continues. They remain bottom of the table and five points from safety.
