Alireza Jahanbakhsh netted a 92nd-minute header as AZ Alkmaar defeated Groningen 3-2.

Off the field its been a good week for AZ with John van den Brom extending his contract, while Wout Weghorst, Guus Til and Marco Bizot were all called up to the Netherlands squad for the first time.

All three players started against Groningen and AZ controlled an entertaining but goalless first half. Sergio Padt had to save well from Weghorst, while Alireza Jahanbakhsh fired just over after bursting into the box. Joris Svensson and Teun Koopmeiners also missed good chances for the hosts while at the other end Mike te Wierik hit the post.

In the 53rd minute the deadlock was finally broken by Svensson who backheeled a Jahanbaksh cross into the bottom corner. The right-back then set up Til to make it 2-0 on 66 minutes, with the midfielder firing past Padt at the second attempt.

AZ were pouring forward but on 70 minutes Groningen pulled one back through Tom van Weert who slid the ball past Bizot. The goal gave Groningen confidence and they equalised with seven minutes to go as Ritsu Doan curled a wonderful effort into the top corner.

It seemed AZ were going to have to settle for a point but in injury time Jahanbakhsh connected with a corner to make sure the hosts gained all three points.

Groningen are 13th after the defeat while AZ are third and now two points off Ajax.
