Twente decided to sack Verbeek on Friday with the club currently sitting bottom of the table with only six games to go.
van Halst said, ”If the results are bad then people always complain. We decided a few weeks ago as board, players and club that we must stick together and focus on improving our results.
”In the past few days there have been many talks at board level and they came to the conclusion that it was time for a change.
”I was very open to the board in advocating that Gertjan Verbeek must stay.
”We tried to maintain a togetherness in the squad and bring players and staff together but if results do not improve it is difficult.
” I have also weighed up my own position as commercial director of FC Twente and that is logical. I was asked by the board to stay to ensure stability.
”You must always keeping believing that we can avoid relegation. It will be very tense and I hope we can avoid the relegation trapdoor.”
