Vincent Janssen was once again the hero for AZ Alkmaar as his stunning goal was enough to see off Vitesse Arnhem in the AFAS Stadion.

The striker’s goal in midweek was enough for AZ Alkmaar to reach the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup, and on 62 minutes Janssen proved to be the match-winner in some style. Janssen flicked the ball over defender Arnold Kruiswijk before sending a lovely lob over the head of Eloy Room.

It was a deserved goal for the home side, who had dominated for most of the match and had gone close through Janssen and Dabney dos Santos before the opener. Just after the goal Room also denied a goalbound header from Markus Henriksen as Vitesse struggled to contain the home side’s attack.

Vitesse coach Rob Maas decided to line up with five defenders in Alkmaar, and his side struggled to create anything going forward, and it was only in the last quarter that they started to create any chances, but both Denis Oliinik and Kosuke Ota were wasteful.

The victory for AZ lifts them up to sixth, while Vitesse are one place lower.
