cillessen ADe Boer had said in pre-season that both goalkeepers would be getting a chance to prove why they should first choice but Vermeer would have a slight head start as he was part of the side that won three Eredivisie titles in a row.
The public opinion on Kenneth Vermeer changed dramatically since last week’s defeat against rivals PSV, with some more mistakes by the Amsterdam-born goalkeeper.

Frank de Boer told the press that he didn’t follow the media reports on this subject, however this hysteria has worked and the public has got what they wanted: Cillessen is the new first choice goal keeper.

Vermeer has always come in for criticism by some as he would play a brilliant game one minute and then spoil it the next minute by making a silly mistake. This also happened the other way around, for example against Heerenveen a couple of weeks ago.

Cillessen has played in the KNVB Cup games over the last season and played the occasional Eredivisie game whenever Vermeer was absent.

Now the Groesbeek-born shot stopper will get a regular chance to show his worth. Former Ajax keeper Piet Schrijvers has already tipped Cillessen to become the #1 keeper for the Dutch national side as well, in an interview with ELFVoetbal magazine.
