De Jong replaced Erik ten Hag as Utrecht boss after he left for Ajax during the winter break.
De Jong told his pre-game press conference, ”I received a lot of reactions from people after I was appointed manager of FC Utrecht.
”During my playing career I was only too aware of changes at clubs and certainly in the aspect of when an assistant become manager at a club.
‘In 2007 I set about my ambition to become a manager and I am delighted to have realized my ambition at FC Utrecht.
”Every game offers the chance to pick up 3 points and we have an interesting period coming up starting with AZ Alkmaar then Feyenoord and Ajax.
”We know that they are not going to be easy games but it is a massive challenge. We must take the initiative when we play at home ”
