Jetro Willems first gained notoriety becoming one of the youngest players ever to participate in a European Championships in 2012. The tournament was a disaster for the Netherlands and not much better for the 17-year old Bert Van Marwijk plucked from obscurity and placed into his starting eleven against Denmark, Portugal and Germany. It was clear Willems had promise, and it was more clear he was not yet ready for big time football.
Four years later, he has transformed himself from not only one of the standout players in a very talented and young PSV side, but the Eredivisie; and, is seen as one of the hottest young prospects in Europe.
He formed an outstanding partnership on the left flank with Memphis Depay, who will ply his trade at Manchester United next season, and Willems would like to follow his friend out of Holland. Talking to reporters in Honderloo, Willems said, “I have one [trophies] in Holland, if someone else wants me, why would I not be ready?”
Previously, Willems has been linked with football giants Real Madrid, Manchester City and Juventus, though if he is to move, Willems may want to take a stepping stone on the way to the true elites, where he can be guaranteed game time at a higher level.
