Tiote, who represented Twente between 2008 and 2010, sadly collapsed during a training session on Monday and was confirmed to have passed away later in the evening.
Van Halst said, ”We are truly shocked and devastated by the passing of Cheick Tiote. He was a mega athlete and he was physically very strong and to learn of his passing at such a young age is awful.
”I helped him together with his family to find there feet here in Enschede when he first arrived at FC Twente. I brought him home after training, showed him where the doctors was and that kind of thing. I tried to translate for him in my best French. In the beginning, he was a very quiet introvert man. But he was a real professional who always wanted to play.
”Cheick Tiote was a strong, quiet battler in our midfield during his time at FC Twente.”
