Juventus assistant Giovanni Martusciello admitted that Matthijs de Ligt needs more time to adapt after a difficult debut in Serie A.

An injury to Giorgio Chiellini saw De Ligt come into the Juventus starting eleven for the first time. All was going well for the Dutch international in the first hour as Juventus raced into a 3-0 lead.

However, Napoli thought back with three goals in fifteen minutes and De Ligt has taken the blame from most of the Italian media.

After the game, Martusciello, who oversaw the game in the absence of Sarri, told the Italian media, “You can take a hit, but not three in fifteen minutes.

“Perhaps we were too confident after the 3-0, we let Napoli fight back. If you make a mistake in your positioning and defend from a reaction, you are going to get goals against these types of players,”

Asked about De Ligt especially, he then added, “He is a little behind when it comes to learning our system.

“He is now playing in a tough competition and has come over from a team that is playing differently. We were hoping for more time to get him used to it, but Chiellini’s injury forced us to change our plans.

“De Ligt also played well in the first hour, so he will get there. We must continue to believe in our approach, so that we continue to follow the same course.”
