Matthijs de Ligt has gained plaudits for his recent performances for Juventus and boss Maurizio Sarri has confirmed the Dutchman has switched positions in the defence.

Due to the absence of left-footed Giorgio Chiellini, Matthijs de Ligt began the season on the left had side of the central defence, while at Ajax he was always on the right.

The Italian media were very critical of De Ligt’s early performances and he was eventually replaced in the centre by Merih Demiral. However, Demiral then got injured which opened the door for De Ligt, who has excelled recently back in the starting eleven.

At his press conference, Sarri confirmed that De Ligt has now switched back to the right-hand side of the defence, which may explain his upturn in form.

He said, “De Ligt now plays on the right and Bonucci on the left because we had found that solution with Demiral. Bonucci also felt comfortable on the left, so we will continue to do so. “
