ADO Den Haag made a bright start to the game with Ron Vlaar having to clear a Melvyn Lorenzen effort off the line before Marco Bizot denied both Bjørn Johnsen and Tom Beugelsdijk.
However, the visitors chances of recording a victory were ruined by the half hour mark as Wilfried Kanon was shown his second yellow card and conceded a penalty for a pull on Vlaar in the box. The defender burst into tears as he was led from the pitch by Lex Immers. Wout Weghorst dispatched the spot kick to put AZ in front at the break.
With the man advantage, AZ Alkmaar went looking for a second but Joris van Overeem, Jonas Svensson and Levi Garcia all missed good chances. Eventually, Guus Til sealed victory for the hosts with a well taken header from a corner.
AZ have their first three points of the season while ADO Den Haag make it two defeats from two.
