Gyrano Kerk netted the only goal of the game as Utrecht earned a 1-0 win over VVV Venlo.

Since losing 3-1 to VVV in the KNVB Cup, Utrecht have gone on a five-game unbeaten run and they started brightly on Wednesday with Zakaria Labyad forcing Lars Unnerstal into a fine save.

On 24 minutes, Sander van de Streek did brilliantly to set up Gyrano Kerk who finished past Unnerstal to give Utrecht a deserved lead. VVV nearly equalised before the break, but Ramon Leeuwin cleared Lennart Thy’s effort off the line.

VVV searched for an equaliser in the second half but they couldn’t trouble David Jensen in the Utrecht goal. The best chance came at the other end but Kerk hit the post.

The win lifts Utrecht temporarily up to fifth, while VVV are 13th.
