Werder Bremen escaped relegation on Saturday after they hammered Cologne 6-1.

Werder Bremen went into the final day of the regular season sitting 17th and in an automatic relegation spot. They needed to beat Cologne and hope that Fortuna Dusseldorf lost to Union Berlin.

Both those things happened on Saturday with Union Berlin winning 3-0 while Werder Bremen hammered Cologne 6-1. Davy Klaassen scored the fourth goal, before being substituted in the 75th minute.

Werder Bremen are not safe yet and will now face a playoff match against either Hamburg of Heidenheim.
