The KNVB Cup second round concluded on Thursday with the final two matches taking place. Below is a round-up of the action.

Volendam 0-2 (AET) PSV

PSV needed extra time to see off bottom of the Eerste Divisie Volendam and reach the third round of the cup.

The Eredivisie leaders dominated from the start but couldn’t find a way past Volendam goalkeeper Hobie Verhulst, who made stunning saves to deny Luuk de Jong and Jorrit Hendrix in the second half.

At the start of extra-time, Marco van Ginkel was brought off the bench and the midfielder broke the deadlock with an acrobatic strike which finally beat Verhulst.

Dylan Mertens was then shown a red card via the video referee for a stamp on Van Ginkel before Hirving Lozano sealed PSV’s progression late on with a fine solo goal.

Almere City 0-4 AZ Alkmaar

AZ Alkmaar eased into the next round with a simple victory over 10-man Almere City.

Stijn Wuytens opened the scoring for the visitors on 34 minutes with a nice header from a Teun Koopmeiners corner. It was nearly 2-0 before the break but Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s strike came crashing off the bar.

Three minutes into the second half, Wout Weghorst capitalised on a defensive error to make it 2-0 before the striker made it three with a nice strike from close range. Moments after the third goal, Kees van Buuren saw red to reduce Almere City to ten-men.

Ricardo van Rhijn hit the bar before Jonas Svensson wrapped up the victory with fifteen minutes left.
