Ajax are the final team in the KNVB Cup semi-finals after a 3-1 victory over Heerenveen.

On Sunday, Heerenveen dented Ajax’s title hopes by holding them to a 4-4 draw in the ArenA. On Thursday, Ajax went looking for revenge and this time they had Andre Onana back in goal, while Nicolas Magallan started in defence for the first time.

VAR played a big role in Sunday’s draw but a technical fault meant that it was missing on Thursday. That proved to be an issue for Ajax’s second goal on 16 minutes. Matthijs de Ligt headed down a corner into the path of Donny van de Beek who seemed to control the ball with his arm before firing into the net. With no VAR the goal stood.

By that point, Ajax were already 1-0 up after Rasmus Kristensen cut the ball back for Noussair Mazraoui to fire in the opener on three minutes. The Moroccan international then went off injured and will be a doubt for the trip to Feyenoord on Sunday.

Seven minutes before the break, Ajax added their third when a nice passing move ended with van de Beek sliding the ball in from close range.

Heerenveen barely threatened but with six minutes left they were gifted a way back into the game. Kristensen didn’t look where he was passing and gave Pelle van Amersfoort a perfect opportunity in the box to pull one back.

An exciting finish was seemingly on the cards when Sam Lammers was bundled over in the box by Magallan. However, Lammers saw his spot kick kept out by Onana.

Ajax will take their place in the semi-final draw alongside Willem II, Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar.
