The last 16 of the KNVB Cup continued on Wednesday with three ties. Below is a round-up of all the action.

Roda JC 1-1 Ajax (2-4 on penalties)

Ajax are into the quarter-finals but needed penalties to see of Roda JC.

Erik ten Hag made eight changes to the side that defeated De Graafschap 8-0 at the weekend but Ajax seemed on course for a win when Dusan Tadic fired them ahead from the spot in the 18th minute after Klaas-Jan Huntelaar had been brought down.

However, Roda JC equalised just before the break when they were awarded a penalty themselves for a dubious foul on Mario Engels by Kostas Lamprou. Mitchell Paulissen made no mistake from the spot.

In the second half, Ajax failed to take control and Ten Hag turned to Kasper Dolberg and Matthijs de Ligt. However, both couldn’t help prevent extra-time.

Roda JC went close in the first half of extra-time, while Kasper Dolberg nearly won it for Ajax. Ten Hag decided to swap Lamprou for Andre Onana before the penalty shootout and the decision proved vital.

After Engals had blasted the first penalty over the bar, Onana saved from
Paulissen. Despite De Ligt firing his spot-kick wide, Tadic, Huntelaar, Dolberg and Daley Blind were all successful to send Ajax into the last eight.

Odin’59 1-3 Heerenveen

Heerenveen came from behind to prevent an embarrassing exit against amateur side Odin 59.

The hosts knocked out Emmen in the last round and appeared on course for another scalp when Mitchel Bormann fired them ahead in the first five minutes.

However, Michel Vlap quickly equalised for Heerenveen from a corner and ten minutes into the second half, Sam Lammers put the visitors ahead.

Eelke de Graaf and Bormann both missed big chances to equalise for Odin’59 before Pelle van Amersfoort settled the tie for Heerenveen.

Fortuna Sittard 2-1 Cambuur

Fortuna Sittard are safely into the quarter-finals after a victory over Keuken Kampioen side Cambuur.

Feeling confident from their win at Feyenoord, Fortuna dominated from the start and took the lead in the 19th minute when Lisandro Semedo found the corner of the net.

The hosts remained in control but they had to wait until the 80th minute before Lazaros Lamprou headed them 2-0 in front.

The end was exciting after Fortuna goalkeeper Aykut Özer was shown a red card and Karim Rossi made it 2-1 but the home side held on for the victory.
