AZ Alkmaar netted twice in injury time as they came from behind to beat Fortuna Sittard 4-2 and reach the KNVB Cup quarter-finals.

The tie against the Eerste Divisie leaders was always going to be difficult for AZ but they took the lead in the second minute when Teun Koopmeiner’s corner was fired into the net by Wout Weghorst.

Guus Til and Weghorst then missed good chances before the home side equalised on 28 minutes through Djibril Dianessy, who finished after good work by Finn Stokkers. Before the break, AZ came close to retaking the lead but Til had a shot cleared off the line and they also struck the crossbar.

Two minutes into the second half, Fortuna stunned AZ with Stokkers heading in a corner to put them 2-1 up.

That seemed like it was going to be the winner but in the 89th minute, Weghorst netted his second to equalise. Two minutes later, Alireza Jahanbakhsh lifted the ball over Fortuna keeper Miguel Santos to give AZ the lead before Levi Garcia made it 4-2 with the last kick of the game.

AZ progress into the last eight while Fortuna can now concentrate fully on gaining promotion to the Eredivisie.
