Heerenveen are into the KNVB Cup quarter-finals after a penalty shootout win over Willem II. The game finished 2-2 after extra-time.

Willem II headed to Friesland on the back of their win at AZ Alkmaar and they had the lead in the 20th minute. Vangelis Pavlidis fired the visitors ahead after good work by Mike Tresor Ndayishimiye.

The Greek striker then had to leave the field on 38 minutes injured and his replacement Marios Vrousai immediately missed a great opportunity to make it 2-0.

Three minutes into the second half, Heerenveen were awarded a penalty for a foul on Chidera Ejuke by Bart Nieuwkoop. The winger seemed to stumble over the defender’s legs, but with no VAR, the spot-kick stood. Hicham Faik scored to make it 1-1.

With fifteen minutes left, Heerenveen had the lead when Ejuke fired towards goal and Willem II defender Dries Saddiki worked the ball into his own net.

The lead only lasted five minutes before Damil Dankerlui headed Willem II level and took the tie into extra-time.

There was to be no winner in extra time so the game headed to penalties. Freek Heerkens and Vrousai missed for Willem II to hand the victory to Heerenveen.

The Frisians will face either Fortuna Sittard or Heerenveen in the last eight.
