zomerHeerenveen hosted Eerste Divisie side VVV Venlo on the 49th birthday of coach Marco van Basten, and they handed him a late present with a 1-0 victory.

The home side were better from the start, but only had one Ramon Zomer header to show for the pressure they put on VVV Venlo’s goal, with Alfred Finnbogason having no luck in front of goal. VVV were restricted to counter attacks as they barely threatened.

Up next was Excelsior v Go Ahead Eagles, and in a game of very few chances, it took a 90th minute goal to decide the match in the Eerste Divisie side’s favour.

In the first minute of added on time, Moussa Kalisse netted the winner for Excelsior with a low shot into the bottom corner from the right hand side of the box. Goalkeeper Eloy Room will be disappointed that the ball slipped by him narrowly, but the Eredivisie sides crash out.

Excelsior, and Heerenveen join Ajax, Roda JC, JVC, Vitesse, Heracles, Feyenoord, Groningen, Cambuur, Utrecht, MVV, NEC, IJsselmeervogels, PEC Zwolle, and holders AZ Alkmaar in the final 16.
