The evenings first game was marred by a controversial refereeing decision which saw Excelsior score a goal that never was. The Rotterdam side were ahead after nine minutes through Adil Assauar, but NAC Breda were left incensed ten minutes later when Jelle Ten Rouwelaar stopped Sepp De Roover’s defensive header on the line, only for the linesman to inexplicably flag for a goal. The NAC players surrounded the referee, but their protests fell on deaf ears.
Excelsior sealed their place in the next round with a crazy 25 minute spell at the end of the game which saw them net four times. Firstly Assauar netted his second on 64 minutes, before goals from Ninos Gouriye, Kevin Vermeulen and Rick Kruys completed the rout.
Next up in Amsterdam, Vitesse Arnhem humiliated Eredivisie champions Ajax at the Arena A as an inspired performance saw them run out 4-0 winners. After 22 minutes Bertrand Traore beat Joel Veltman before firing past Diederik Boer, and just before half time Zakaria Labyad doubled the lead with a stunning long range strike.
Frank de Boer’s men had no answer to their speedy and determined opponents and Traore once again got the better of Veltman before slotting past Boer on 57 minutes to make it 3-0 before Valeri Qazaishvili completed the rout three minutes later.
Vitesse and Excelsior join PEC Zwolle, AZ, Twente, Cambuur and Groningen in the last eight of the KNVB Cup, while PSV still need to face Roda JC in their last 16 tie.
