FC Utrecht have booked their place in the KNVB Cup third round after a slender 1-0 lead over Groningen.

FC Groningen took the initiative from the start but that only resulted in a few half chances. At the other end, Utrecht also failed to make a big impression in the first-half.

On the hour mark, Utrecht lost striker Jean-Christoph Bahebeck to what looks a serious injury. However, his replacement, Issah Abass opened the scoring in the 68th minute after being found by Gyrano Kerk.

Groningen pushed forward looking for the equaliser, but several saves from Maarten Paes kept the score at 1-0 for the visitors.
