The friendly match was canceled an hour before kick off after a suspicious item was found by police, leading to the evacuation of the stadium in Hannover.
Netherlands players were on their way to the stadium when they were told the game was canceled. The players and staff were then taken to a police station before being escorted back to their hotel.
On his way to Hannover airport, KNVB director Bert van Oostveen has given his account of what happened.
Van Oostveen is quoted by VI saying, “You saw immediately that something was wrong. We were taken to a police station and from there driven under escort to the hotel. Then it was our priority to bring players safely home. That was successful. Everyone’s gone well. ”
On whether football has lost its innocence, he added, “Let’s hope not, but after Friday everyone sees the world totally different.”
