Netherlands U21 boss Erwin van de Looi has confirmed that talks are planned with Ajax right-back Sergino Dest over choosing Netherlands over the U.S national team.

Dest has never represented Netherlands at any age despite being born in the country and playing for Ajax since a young age.

The 18-year-old is set to make his U.S.A debut later this month in their friendlies against Uruguay and Mexico, but recently told Voetbal International that that he was open to talking with the KNVB.

Van de Looi has now told VI that talks are planned with the young full-back in the near future.

He said, “We invited him for an interview and he subsequently had to cancel because he had obligations with Ajax.

“We hope that this agreement will be reached as soon as possible. It is, of course, logical that we have inquired with him and want to talk to him. That is no different than with other boys with a double passport. “

Van de Looi added on criticism that Dest hasn’t been called up in the past, “It is not that we have only seen Dest now that he has played a few matches in Ajax’s first team. I saw maybe fifteen matches of Jong Ajax last year where he almost always participated. It is not the case that Dest is suddenly falling out of the sky.”
