A few weeks ago, Sneijder announced his retirement from international football but stated his wish to play one final international to say goodbye. However, he will not be picked to face England and Portugal, which led to Sneijder stating his disappointment.
He said to NOS, “It’s not about me, it’s about having a moment together with the fans to say goodbye, I’ve been there for 15 years, I’m a record international. As Robben has given his farewell, I think there is also a place for me.”
Sneijder thought the friendly with Portugal would have been a perfect opportunity, “But that is an away game, not for my own audience, but I did think: I’ve played against Portugal, I’ve played with Ajax under Ronald Koeman, how beautiful it would be to end up against Portugal under Koeman against Portugal. But it is what it is, I am not going to bother about it either.”
The KNVB took to Twitter to reassure Sneijder that he would be given a farewell, “We will certainly organize another moment that Wesley Sneijder can say goodbye to the Oranjefans. More information will follow later on.
“He deserves that, everyone agrees. How that will look exactly is impossible to say at the moment.”
