The Second division was last played in the 1970-1971 season having been started in 1956 and was won by Volewijckers from Amsterdam.
The division will help in a smoother transformation between the Jupiler League and the Eredivisie, i.e. from the amateur football to the professional level. Currently the clubs in the Juplier league do not jump to the Eredivisie because of serious licensing requirements.
Whether the plan gets the approval from all the clubs in both leagues is doubtful, as they do not agree on mandatory promotion and relegation; the process affects the guaranteed income.
Should the plan to push ahead with the division go through the league will start from the 2016/17 season.
