Ronald Koeman has apologised for comments he made about Northern Ireland’s style of play after Netherlands 3-1 win last month.

After the win in Rotterdam, which saw Netherlands come from behind with three late goals, Koeman told NOS, “I thought they did perfectly within their capabilities. But what they play is also outrageous football. It is allowed and they get the most out of their qualities, but it is terrible to look at it.”

Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill criticised Koeman’s comments and at his press conference on Friday, the Oranje boss apologised.

He was asked by a British journalist if Northern Ireland would have extra motivation due to his comments. Koeman responded, “If they see it as an extra motivation, I wish them every success.

“They were irritations after the game and I used the wrong words. I was referring to time wasting, the referee did nothing against it. But if I have said the wrong words, I say sorry. I didn’t want to be disrespectful. ”

Koeman continued, “I wasn’t talking about their playing style. They gave everything, which makes them very difficult to beat.”
