Ronald Koeman has confirmed at his press conference on Wednesday that Jasper Cillessen is Netherlands first-choice goalkeeper heading into the UEFA Nations League.

Since Koeman took over in March, he has switched between Cillessen and Jeroen Zoet for the four friendly internationals he has overseen. However, Koeman has now provided clarity that Cillessen is his number one.

When asked who would be the goalkeeper against Peru, Koeman responded, “Cillessen is going to keep. They have both played two matches. We now want to create clarity at all positions, but certainly in the goal. Jasper is slightly better in the overall picture.”

Cillessen is second choice at Barcelona, but Koeman doesn’t see that as a problem, “He has shown that – provided he regularly competes for a match – he is not bothered by that.

“And what is the limit? That is not so easy. I just set up the best team. Jasper belongs in this case. If someone does not play for months, it will be a different situation, that also applies to Kenny Tete, for example.

“It is disappointing for Jeroen, we are very happy that we have two great keepers, but the choice has now fallen on Jasper.”
