Ronald Koeman has confirmed he spoke with Barcelona in January but turned down the Spanish giants due to his obligations with Netherlands.

After Ernesto Valverde was sacked in January, Koeman’s name was linked with the Catalan giants. He has made no secret of his desire to manage his former club, but Koeman turned down the role due to his loyalty to the Dutch national team.

He told Spanish newspaper ‘Marca’, “Yes, they called me weeks ago.

“I said no to Barcelona because I am with the national team.It was not the moment to go.”

Koeman was also asked about the form of Frenkie de Jong, “As far as I am concerned, he performs well. He plays in a different position than he is used to, but that is up to the coach. He learns a lot, but in my team he plays differently.”
