The former Ajax captain joined Everton for £25 million during the summer but has made an underwhelming start to the campaign. Klaassen has made eight appearances for the club but has completed 90 minutes only twice.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Koeman defended his fellow Dutchman and said he needs time to adapt to the Premier League.

He said, “He needs time.

“He is okay. He is intelligent on the ball. He can improve in fitness and he can improve physically in battles in the midfield. That is what he needs to learn and improve but that is normal. The Dutch league is not the Premier League and the boy gets time for that. It is all about the player himself. It is the same question for other young players.

“It is for players like Sandro Ramirez to keep quiet and keep patience. He will come good because I don’t have any doubts as to the quality of the player.”
