Ronald Koeman is proud of his players after Netherlands defeated Germany 3-0 in Amsterdam on Saturday evening.

Goals from Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum handed Netherlands their biggest ever win over Germany and first victory over their rivals since 2002.

Speaking to NOS at full-time, Koeman said, “We can be proud of the boys, they have fought with everything they had in them. And then you see that we can also play great football. Also the debutants (Steven Bergwijn, Denzel Dumfries and Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld) did well. If you look at where they can be in four years time; I definitely see a good future for the Dutch national team.”

Netherlands had some troubles with Germany at times and Koeman admitted he wasn’t totally satisfied, “There have been enough times when it could have ended differently. We started very sloppy and we did not have a grip on Germany in the initial phase. Then we grew into the match, but after the break, large spaces arose. You must not do that against the Germans, they played football between the lines and created great chances.”

However, Koeman thinks the win can be a massive boost for the nation, “This was really necessary. Not only the national coach and the players, but the whole of the Netherlands needed this. A beginning was made, now we are one step further. “
