Ronald Koeman has reacted to the news that Ajax will not use the clause to sign Mohamed Ihattaren on a permanent deal.

Ajax confirmed on Monday evening that they would not use the clause in their loan deal to sign Ihattaren and he will return to Juventus in January after not appearing for the club all season.

Speaking to ESPN, Ronald Koeman was asked about Ihattaren being let go by Ajax and he said, “It is of course a shame because he was a great talent. Only a great talent must also learn from his mistakes. From the outside, it is very unfortunate to see. The first step must always come from the player, and undoubtedly Ajax has such reasons not to do that. But I am not aware of them.”

Koeman was Netherlands head coach when there was an announcement that Ihattaren had chosen Oranje over Morocco. However, the 20-year-old’s career has taken a turn since then with his departure from PSV, failed loan to Sampdoria, and now troubled spell with Ajax.

Koeman will once again be Netherlands head coach after the World Cup but unless he turns his career around, Ihattaren will not be part of his squad.
