Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman explained his decision to omit AZ Alkmaar winger Calvin Stengs from his squad, while he refused to shut the door on Klaas Jan Huntelaar’s international future.

Stengs has made an impressive start to the campaign with AZ Alkmaar but remains part of Netherlands U21 squad. Koeman lost Steven Bergwijn to injury and called up Justin Kluivert as his replacement.

Koeman explained on Monday during his press conference, “Kluivert can play on two sides and he plays at a higher level. I think Stengs is developing well. Yesterday (Vitesse v AZ, Sunday) It wasn’t great. What you do see is that he is physically stronger. He has a lot of feeling on the ball. “

Klaas Jan Huntelaar has been scoring goals for Ajax and with the striker position a problem for Oranje, Koeman was asked about a possible recall for the 36-year-old. He responded, “You always have to look: what do you have and what can you improve? If he becomes the regular striker (at Ajax) and still shows that level in the Champions League, who says I’m not going to select him? ”
