After his fine work with the Dutch youth teams, Koeman promoted van Wonderen to assistant-manager. When asked why Koeman chose him in particular, van Wonderen replied, “He wants to work with staff members who can help him build a team. He wants an older, experienced coach next to him who can help him in that part. He also wants someone with feeling who can be close to the youth players.”

The 49-year-old added, “We played together for one year with Feyenoord so there was a connection as well. We’ve been working for three years for Dutch teams, so I know a lot of Dutch players. So that’s why he asked.”
