Willem II have gone top of the Eredivisie after a 2-1 victory over Emmen. Mats Kohlert scored a double for the hosts.

The home side went into the game with confidence having won two of their opening three games. Willem II dominated from the start but could not find a way past Dennis Telgenkamp, who kept out Sebastian Holmén’s effort. Marios Vrousai and Dries Saddiki also fired good chances wide.

In the 33rd minute, Willem II finally took the lead with Mats Köhlert dribbling towards the Emmen goal before beating Telgenkamp with a great strike with the outside of his left boot.

It should have been 2-0 before the break but Saddiki hit the post, while Eredivisie top scorer Vangelis Pavlidis went close on several occasions.

After the break, Emmen improved and just before the hour mark they were level from the penalty spot. Michael de Leeuw was taken down by Holmén and Marko Koler made no mistake with his spot-kick.

Willem II regained their lead in the 72nd minute thanks to Kohlert again, who cut in from the right before his fierce drive flew past Telgenkamp.

Emmen went looking for an equaliser but their biggest chance fell to their goalkeeper in injury time, but Telgenkamp’s header flew over the bar.

Willem II go top of the table thanks to the victory, while Emmen remain 13th.
