Vincent Kompany believes Virgil van Dijk is the Premier League’s greatest centre-back.

Van Dijk has been a standout player for Liverpool since joining the club from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million. He was also recently named the UEFA Champions League player of the year.

Now, Vincent Kompany has chosen the Netherlands captain as his pick for the best Premier League defender ever.

The Belgian international and now Anderlecht player coach was asked by Sky Sports where he ranked himself among the best centre-backs in Premier League history.

He responded, “I never to try to compare. My journey is different, I’ve had to deal with different tools and for me not to play this game, let’s not escape the irony. So I’ve had to deal with that and I’ve tried to be substantial for my team.

“I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, he’s not been on the scene as long as Terry and Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he’s shown in the last years.

“He’s shown if he had been around longer he’d have been at the top for a long time.

“The Liverpool before Van Dijk and after are a completely different set up. I’ll give him that one.”
