AZ Alkmaar captain Teun Koopmeiners has admitted he was disappointed to be left out of the Netherlands squad to face Poland and Italy next month.

The AZ star was in the provisional squad for the two Nations League games, but Dwight Lodeweges decided not to select him for the final squad and instead he drops into the U21 squad.

Speaking to AZ TV, Koopmeiners admitted he was disappointed, but it has made him more determined to be included next time.

The 22-year-old said,”It was exciting for a while and I was looking forward to the news. Then it is disappointing that I am not there. It is up to me to make sure that I will be there next time. There is nothing else to do.

“I was quite disappointed. That is also part of being a top athlete. It is not certain that you will be there, I did not assume 100%, but I was hoping for it. If it does not happen, you will be disappointed. There are two sides to it: it also gives me extra motivation to be there next time. “
