Teun Koopmeiners excelled as AZ Alkmaar defeated PSV Eindhoven 3-1 in the Philips Stadion.

For the second time in three days, PSV were in a title battle but Roger Schmidt had to do without Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke, who joined Mario Gotze on the injury list. Ryan Thomas started. For AZ, Albert Gudmundsson came into the starting eleven.

PSV started brightly but they could not trouble Marco Bizot, and in the 30th minute, Calvin Stengs played Myron Boadu in on goal and he was brought down by Yvon Mvogo. Teun Koopmeiners made it 1-0 from the penalty spot.

AZ were then in full control before the break and they got a second goal in spectacular style. A corner was brilliantly flicked over Mvogo by Koopmeiners heel.

Schmidt swapped Thomas for Mauro Junior at half-time and PSV managed to pull one back in the 59th minute when Philipp Max curled a free-kick into the net from the edge of the box.

PSV had a lot of possession after the goal but they failed to create chances and not even the return of Marco van Ginkel after two-and-a-half years out could help them.

In the last minute, AZ sealed the victory as Stengs cut inside before his shot deflected off Jordan Teze and left Mvogo helpless.

The victory means AZ Alkmaar are fifth and now four points behind Ajax. PSV Eindhoven are now third.
