A single goal from Tonny Vilhena was enough for Feyenoord to stun the Premier League giants and get their Europa League campaign off to a perfect start.

Afterwards, Kuyt said, ”You could notice the atmosphere at the final whistle what such a victory meant to all the fans of Feyenoord. This is an amazing and historic victory for the club and a great start to our Europa League campaign so things could not be better.

”If you look at the history of Feyenoord they have not beaten Manchester United very often and if you look at the strength of their team on the pitch it’s fantastic that this Feyenoord with so little experience in Europe has beaten them. We knew the quality that they would have and it was important for us not to start too enthusiatically. We were patient and compact and we managed to stay in the game . After going 1-0 up we had to battle due to the physical intensity that they possess.

”In the run up to this game we had to focus on what we have to do. We prepared well and our league form gave us confidence. I have a lot of respect for a team such as Manchester United with players such as Paul Pogba and Zlatan Inbrahimovic and of course their manager Jose Mourinho but I said to my teammates before the game that if Manchester United give 5 percent less effort than us tonight then we will win and we managed to take full advantage of such a scenario.

”As captain of this club I am really proud of the team and we can now look forward to playing PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.”
