Feyenoord would have wrapped up their first title in 18 years with a win over Excelsior on Sunday but they were on the end of a shock 3-0 defeat. They now head into the final round of matches next weekend with a one point gap over Ajax.

Kuyt said, ”We can speak for hours about what went wrong today but we must forget about it and look ahead to next weekend and finish the job.

”We have shown all season that we can deal with pressure and the pressure only increases in the last games of the season. We were not ourselves today and we deserved to lose. It is disappointing because we had two great chances in the game. But we must now put all our energy in our final game against Heracles Almelo where there is still all to play for and finish the job in De Kuip.

”Feyenoord fans never give up. The legion is an example of this and they are an inspiration for us as players. We must show our true qualities next weekend and become champions of the Netherlands and we must do this for the Feyenoord fans.”
