Stegeman took charge of Heracles in 2014 after Jan de Jonge was dismissed. He guided the club away from the relegation zone in his first year and then 8th in his second. During the 2015/16 season, Heracles finished 6th and qualified for the Europa League. However, their adventure in Europe ended quickly on away goals to Portuguese side Arouca. Last season Heracles finished 10th and they currently sit 11th.

After four years in charge, Stegeman has now decided to move on, telling the club’s website, “Together with the other members of the staff and the players’ group, I will do everything to successfully close the current season. I always thank the club for giving me the opportunity and the confidence to prove myself as a head coach.”

Stegeman is already being linked with a new job. Voetbal International are reporting that he is the top candidate to take charge of Go Ahead Eagles in the summer.
