The 1-0 win over Russia in the first group game put Netherlands in a good position against Germany, who were outclassed by Spain in their first tie.
However from the start it was the Germans who took the ascendancy with Waldschmidt striking the woodwork in the third minute, before Twente keeper Joel Drommel was forced into a good save soon after.
The best chance of the first half fell to Pelle van Amersfoort, but the tall Heerenveen forward could only head over from yards out after a pinpoint cross from Issa Kallon.
Van Amersfoort was denied one-on-one with the Germany keeper in the second half, while Kallon saw a good effort saved. At the other end Drommel was forced into a fine double save, but with two minutes to go Gianluca Rizzo pounced to hand Germany the win.
All four teams now go into the final group games on Monday with three points, and Netherlands will need to defeat Spain in order to reach the semi-finals.
horrendous defending. Germany on the balance of play deserved this. so much skill but clueless on creating space. The striker was horrendous. I could see this team has great ability but Aron Winter could not manage a MLS squad which was a disaster. I have never seen the Dutch look so pathetic at the back at one time on every level be it Senior, u21-, u19, u 17. That being said they are young but I saw no system just playing on skill. Germany played a system wide and the Jong Oranje did not know how to defend. When they had the ball in the final third and had clear chances they could not deliver. Beat Spain and you move on but I see no system with misused talent.
