Bram van Polen skied a late penalty as PEC Zwolle settled for a 1-1 draw with AZ Alkmaar.

AZ headed to PEC Zwolle on an seven-game winning streak in the Eredivisie which had seen them climb to within five points of PSV at the top.

However, fourth placed PEC Zwolle have been the surprise package of the season and they got the first big chance of the game as Marco Bizot had to make a good save to deny Ryan Thomas. AZ gradually grew into the game but on 32 minutes, the hosts led as Terell Ondaan finished from close range after Marco Bizot kept out Younes Namli’s strike.

The lead only lasted two minutes before Teun Koopmeiners corner was headed into the net by Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Ondaan flicked a strike against the bar just before half-time as the teams went in all square.

AZ had the better of the second half but Diederik Boer denied Jahanbakhsh on more than one occasion while substitute Mats Seuntjens hit the bar.

With three minutes to go, PEC Zwolle were given a great chance to win the game when Pantelis Hatzidiakos pulled Kingsley Ehizibue to the ground for a penalty. However, Bram van Polen hammered his spot kick over the bar and the game ended in a draw.

The point means PEC Zwolle move to within four points of PSV while PEC Zwolle remain 4th.
