Vlemmings was last active as a manager in 2013 when he was in charge of Excelsior Rotterdam and led them to 16th place in the Eredivisie.

He has also managed Cypriot side AEK Larnaca in season 2011 – 2012. He has also been an assistant at FC Eindhoven, NAC Breda and Feyenoord.

Go Ahead Eagles chairman Edwin Lugt reacted by stating the following, ”Go Ahead Eagles is a great challenge for Leon Vlemmings. I am convinced that we have created the correct environment for him and his staff to get results on the pitch.”

Go Ahead Eagles will play in the Eerste Divisie next season after finishing bottom in the Eredivisie this season.
