Alderweireld was heavily linked to Leverkusen two weeks ago, with the players representatives said to have met with officials of the club, and a deal seemed close.
Then the Leverkusen director Wolfgang Holzhäuser stated last week in the German media that Ajax’s asking price of €7.5 million was too high for the club, and they were trying to negotiate a lower fee.
However today, the Belgian defenders agent Soren Lerby told Kicker that he has not heard from Leverkusen for a few weeks, and any deal for the player seems dead.
English Premier League side Liverpool have been credited with interest in the 24 year old, who has one year left on his Ajax deal, but whether they are still looking for a deal is unknown.
Ajax have already been looking for replacements, should the Belgian international leave, with Utrecht defender Mike van der Hoorn high on their list of targets, while coach Frank de Boer confirmed their interest this week.
