Both sides went into the game without a win in their last four games and that resulted in a very open first-half.
After only ten minutes, Bryan Linssen opened the scoring with a close range finish from Eli Dasa’s cross. Six minutes later, Linssen played Tim Matavz in on goal and the Slovenian fired Vitesse 2-0 in front.
Vitesse were cruising and could have scored more but in the 28th minute, Rodney Kongolo headed one back for Heerenveen. Chidera Ejuke then skilfully punished some poor defending at the back to equalise for the visitors with ten minutes of the first-half remaining.
Heerenveen went into the second half full of confidence but in the 56th minute, Linssen made it 3-2 with a fierce strike from Oussana Tannane’s cross.
Vitesse then sealed the victory in the 66th minute when Lucas Woudenberg brought down Nouha Dicko and Tannane made it 4-2 from the spot.
The victory means Vitesse are now sixth while Heerenveen are 10th.
