Vitesse Arnhem failed to claim second place in the table after being held to a 1-1 draw by Heracles Almelo.

Feyenoord’s 0-0 draw with PEC Zwolle opened the opportunity for Vitesse to move second with a win in Almelo. However, that never seemed likely with Vitesse poor from the start against Heracles.

Reuven Niemeijer had at least three good chances to give Heracles the lead in the first half, but couldn’t take any, while Remko Pasveer was at his best to keep the hosts out.

Vitesse gained more possession in the second half, but failed to make it count and in the 73rd minute Kristoffer Peterson netted from a Brandley Kuwas cross to give Heracles the lead. That appeared to be the winning goal but in the 87th minute, fired in an equaliser to earn Vitesse a point.

The point means Vitesse sit fourth, while Heracles are 12th
