PSV Eindhoven have moved five points clear at the top of the Eredivisie after an edgy 2-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven. However, the victory was marred by a head injury suffered by Hirving Lozano in the first-half.

PSV were determined to bounce back after their 2-2 draw at Emmen last weekend and put even more pressure on Ajax, who face Feyenoord on Sunday.

Before the game got underway, the fans said goodbye to former coach Phillip Cocu. He watched on as PSV took the lead in the 15th minute when Steven Bergwijn burst into the box before crossing for Lozano to tap in. The Mexican then doubled the lead four minutes later from a Gaston Pereiro cross.

PSV were firmly in control but in the 34th minute, Groningen pulled one back out of nowhere. Ludovit Reis got the ball on the edge of the area before sending a strike into the top corner thanks to a deflection.

The home side looked to restore their two goal lead but Sergio Padt made three great saves to deny Luuk de Jong and Bergwijn. PSV were then dealt a blow before the break when Lozano went down after a clash of heads with Tim Handwerker. The Mexican was taken off on a stretcher and taken straight to hospital.

In the second half, PSV failed to kill the game and the crowd grew nervous as Groningen gained confidence. The bar denied Thomas Bruns and equaliser before Jeroen Zoet was forced into a good save just before the end as PSV nervously held on for a big three points.

PSV move five points clear at the top while Groningen are 16th.
